Cases > Alural Belgium NV

From wastewater to reusable process water: Alural closes the water loop

Sector

Metalworking industry

Types of water

Process water, Wastewater

Challenge

Alural wanted to focus on full zero discharge of wastewater, achieve minimal discharge of residue and guarantee operational reliability. Key goals as part of their strong ecological and sustainable ambitions within a water- and energy-intensive production process.

Approach

Chosen Water Treatment

Circular water treatment, Wastewater treatment

Result

Circular, efficient and ready for the future.
At Alural Belgium, Eco-Vision processes between 40,000 and 60,000 litres of wastewater every day into high-quality reusable process water. With an output of 3,500 litres of purified water per hour and a recovery rate of more than 95%, Alural is setting a new standard in sustainable water management within the aluminium sector.

Thanks to physico-chemical pre-treatment and double vacuum evaporation under high vacuum, the concentration of salts and metals is significantly reduced. The residual stream remains limited to only approximately 2 m³ per day, which drastically reduces transport for external processing – with the direct result of lower CO₂ emissions.

The installation is equipped with full automation, online monitoring and redundant components for maximum operational reliability. In addition, reusing low-conductivity water ensures lower chemical consumption in the existing demineralisation installation.

This total solution proves that closing the loop goes further than saving water: it reduces costs, increases efficiency and supports the ESG objectives of Alural and the Reynaers Group. A strong example of how smart technology and sustainability reinforce each other.

Bendec

Zero Liquid Discharge in aluminium treatment

For Bendec, Eco-Vision realised a mobile closed water circuit, reusing rinse water via ion exchangers and evaporating residual water with a vacuum evaporator on heat pump. Result: 11,000 m³ water savings, €22,000 annual savings and no more liquid discharge. 100% circular water management is now a reality.

Physico-chemical water treatment installation.

Eurocircuits

Smart wastewater management in the PCB sector

Thanks to a combination of physico-chemical treatment and advanced ion exchangers, Eurocircuits reuses 60,000 m³ of water each year and reduces the copper content to below 0.05 ppm. Result: official authorisation to discharge to surface water and an annual saving of €110,000.

Datwyler

Closed water loop in the medical industry

At Datwyler, the rinse water from rubber components has been fully reused since 2018 via a reverse osmosis installation in closed loop. The result: 33,600 m³ less water consumption and €85,000 saving per year. Circular, pure and efficient.
